The ponies of Chincoteague are world famous, thanks partially to a series of books by Marguerite Henry, a movie based on one of those books and the fact that some of them are auctioned off every year to help support the local volunteer fire company. The pony auction, the resulting publicity and the Chincoteague way of life draw many tourists to help the local economy and the fire department.
